Southstone Behavioral Health is a comprehensive treatment center for adolescents who have been experiencing difficulties at home, in school, or within their community as a result of mental health challenges.
Southstone is located on 220 rural acres in southern Virginia. Our campus offers a serene atmosphere in which young people can step away from the pressures and distractions of everyday life and work in close collaboration with teams of experienced and compassionate professionals. In addition to state-of-the-art facilities for treatment and education, our grounds include comfortable guest rooms, an inviting dining area, and ample spaces for indoor and outdoor recreation.
At Southstone, we understand the unique ways that mental health disorders and related challenges can impact young people, and we have developed age-appropriate programming to help our guests achieve true and lasting healing.

Guidelines for admission to Southstone Behavioral Health in South Boston, VA
Southstone Behavioral Health accepts adolescents ages 11-17 whose lives have been disrupted by a variety of mental health disorders, with a special focus on young people who have trauma- or attachment-related needs.
All admissions decisions at Southstone Behavioral Health are made on an individual basis, following a close assessment of each potential guest’s needs and goals.
The following are among the many issues and challenges that may bring an adolescent to Southstone:
- Anxiety disorders
- Attachment disorders
- Bipolar disorder
- Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other effects of trauma
- Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD)
Also, we are prepared to treat young people whose mental health concerns are accompanied by substance abuse and addiction, but only if they have a primary mental health diagnosis.
We are unable to accept adolescents who have a history of sexual offenses or who have a primary diagnosis of a substance use disorder. We also cannot admit young people who have an IQ below 75.

We also encourage the adolescents who heal with us to play an active role in their treatment experience, with the goal of enabling them to take ownership of their recovery and become informed and effective advocates for their continued progress.

The Southstone team includes a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist, a nurse practitioner, nurses, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs), registered play therapists (RPTs), certified clinical trauma professionals (CCTPs), youth specialists, teachers, and other experts.
