As updates on the impact of the coronavirus continue to be released, we want to take a moment to inform you of the heightened preventative measures we have put in place at Southstone Behavioral Health Hospital to keep our patients, their families, and our employees safe. All efforts are guided by and in adherence to the recommendations distributed by the CDC.

Please note that for the safety of our patients, their families, and our staff, on-site visitation is no longer allowed at Southstone Behavioral Health Hospital.

  • This restriction has been implemented in compliance with updated corporate and state regulations to further reduce the risks associated with COVID-19.
  • Options for telehealth visitation are continuously evaluated so that our patients can remain connected to their loved ones.
  • Alternate methods of communication for other services may be offered when deemed clinically appropriate.

CDC updates are consistently monitored to ensure that all guidance followed is based on the latest information released.

  • All staff has received infection prevention and control training.
  • Thorough disinfection and hygiene guidance has been provided.
  • Patient care supplies such as masks and hand sanitizer are being monitored and utilized.
  • Temperature and symptom screening protocols are in place for all patients and staff.
  • Social distancing strategies have been implemented to ensure that patients and staff maintain proper distance from one another at all times.
  • Cleaning service contracts have been reviewed for additional support.
  • Personal protective equipment items are routinely checked to ensure proper and secure storage.

  • Clean and disinfect objects and surfaces that are frequently touched.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Stay home when you are sick, except to get medical care.

Information about our adolescent treatment center in South Boston, VA

Southstone Behavioral Health is a comprehensive treatment center for adolescents who have been experiencing difficulties at home, in school, or within their community as a result of mental health challenges.

Southstone is located on 220 rural acres in southern Virginia. Our campus offers a serene atmosphere in which young people can step away from the pressures and distractions of everyday life and work in close collaboration with teams of experienced and compassionate professionals. In addition to state-of-the-art facilities for treatment and education, our grounds include comfortable guest rooms, an inviting dining area, and ample spaces for indoor and outdoor recreation.

At Southstone, we understand the unique ways that mental health disorders and related challenges can impact young people, and we have developed age-appropriate programming to help our guests achieve true and lasting healing.

Above all else, Southstone Behavioral Health is a safe, structured, and supportive place, where each adolescent is heard, valued, and empowered to become the author of their personal narrative.

Who We Serve

Guidelines for admission to Southstone Behavioral Health in South Boston, VA

Southstone Behavioral Health accepts adolescents ages 11-17 whose lives have been disrupted by a variety of mental health disorders, with a special focus on young people who have trauma- or attachment-related needs.  

All admissions decisions at Southstone Behavioral Health are made on an individual basis, following a close assessment of each potential guest’s needs and goals.  

The following are among the many issues and challenges that may bring an adolescent to Southstone: 

  • Anxiety disorders 
  • Attachment disorders 
  • Depression 
  • Bipolar disorder 
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) 
  • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other effects of trauma 
  • Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) 

Also, we are prepared to treat young people whose mental health concerns are accompanied by substance abuse and addiction, but only if they have a primary mental health diagnosis. 

We are unable to accept adolescents who have a history of sexual offenses or who have a primary diagnosis of a substance use disorder. We also cannot admit young people who have an IQ below 75.

Treatment services for adolescents who have been struggling with mental health challenges

Southstone Behavioral Health is dedicated to providing the comprehensive, personalized care that will enable young people to achieve improved quality of life and successfully reintegrate into their families, schools, and communities.  

Each person who heals at Southstone will follow an individualized plan that is based upon a thorough assessment of their strengths, needs, and goals. In general, every guest will benefit from certain fundamental features of our programming, such as the following:

The specifics of each guest’s individualized plan, including which services are included and how those services are customized, will be determined solely by what is best for them. We include parents and guardians in this process to the greatest degree that is both possible and clinically appropriate.  

We also encourage the adolescents who heal with us to play an active role in their treatment experience, with the goal of enabling them to take ownership of their recovery and become informed and effective advocates for their continued progress.

Experienced adolescent treatment professionals at Southstone Behavioral Health

Treatment at Southstone is provided by multidisciplinary teams of experienced professionals. Every member of the Southstone staff is committed to working closely with our guests and their families to identify and address the obstacles that have been preventing them from living happier and more satisfying lives.  

The Southstone team includes a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist, nurse practitioner, nurses, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs), registered play therapists (RPTs), certified clinical trauma professionals (CCTPs), youth specialists, teachers, and other experts.
