Programming options at Southstone in South Boston, VA
Our dedication to the adolescents we treat is grounded on the individualized care we offer. We believe that in order for adolescents to truly heal, they require access to multiple therapeutic interventions and programming options that are customized to meet their specific needs.
Adolescents who come to Southstone in South Boston, Virginia, will receive care in a residential treatment setting. To increase positive outcomes, we provide adolescents with daily schedules that outline their participation in activities relating to each focus area of their treatment plan. As part of their residential treatment, they will attend school and have the opportunity to participate in vocational education services when appropriate. We also place a high emphasis on family engagement throughout the therapeutic process, and therefore put much effort into encouraging families to be actively involved with the youth in our care.
Residential care at Southstone in South Boston, VA
All of the treatment services at Southstone occur within a secure residential setting that is monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our campus houses two gender-specific dormitories, one for males and one for females. Within each residence, the rooms are separated by age, based on the current population receiving care. Each dormitory has a residential supervisor who maintains the appropriate structure and programming of each unit while also making sure that all the adolescents remain safe. These supervisors work with the adolescents’ primary therapists and the director of clinical services to ensure that each youth receives the most optimal care in the manner that is of most benefit to them. While in our residential program, adolescents live in a structured environment that utilizes short and frequent interventions, evidence-based practices, redirection, praise, encouragement, and positive reinforcement.
The residences where youth stay during their time with us are designed to provide a therapeutic living environment that aids in the development of measurable gains in the following areas:
- Daily living skills
- Positive behaviors
- Healthy socialization
- Resource knowledge
- Understanding mental health-related issues
A multitude of therapeutic interventions are incorporated into the residential program, including medication management services, group therapy, art therapy, and individual therapy. Additionally, we have a mindful wellness room where adolescents can participate in activities like yoga and Zumba.
The length of stay in our residential program will vary based on the needs, progress, and treatment goals of each adolescent.
Academic programming at Southstone in South Boston, VA
Receiving residential treatment for mental health concerns should not impose on an adolescent’s education, so we incorporate academic programming into each youth’s plan of care. Our residential school resides on-site, and adolescents attend classes five days a week, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We address each adolescent’s educational experience with an understanding that their needs are different and that we must attend to those needs accordingly. The following are part of our residential school program:
- Special education
- Vocational education
- Educational/vocational diagnostic evaluations and assessments
- On-site speech-language screening and services (contracted)
- On-site physical therapy evaluations and services (contracted)
- On-site occupational therapy evaluations and services (contracted)
Each adolescent’s educational plan aims to achieve the following goals:
- Provide individualized educational services that address specific cognitive and emotional needs
- Provide a continuum of services to and from local education agencies
- Assist local education agencies in the development of programs for adolescents upon their return to their home school
The credits that adolescents receive while in our residential school can be transferred to their home schools so that there is no interruption in their academic progress. Additionally, a GED training program is available for older adolescents who may be at risk for failing to graduate high school.
Vocational education opportunities at Southstone in South Boston, VA
We strive to give the adolescents in our care as many advantages as possible. One such advantage is to arm them with the skills needed to thrive in their future careers. We offer opportunities to develop these skills through our vocational services, which are divided into three categories: vocational education, vocational campus work program, and vocation in the therapeutic milieu.
We assign adolescents to these programs based on their interests, career goals, and progress in their overall treatment process. The vocational activities occur both during the school day and at designated times after the regular school day is over, depending on the program.
In the vocational education program, adolescents have the opportunity to meet with local community representatives in order to experience real-life job situations. In the vocational campus work program, adolescents are able to hold on-campus jobs, allowing them to gain work experience in a safe and supervised environment. The vocation in the therapeutic milieu program provides adolescents with daily activities that encourage the development of independent living skills.
The importance of family involvement
The support of family members is crucial to an adolescent’s overall healing process, so we promote various ways to involve family members in their child’s treatment.
We offer family therapy sessions based on an adolescent’s identified treatment plan. We encourage face-to-face sessions, but when that is not possible due to scheduling or geographical distance, we implement videoconferencing sessions. The goal of family therapy is to improve communication between the adolescent and their family. It also provides a safe space in which to address and process significant issues that are impacting the family system. This also serves as a time for family members to learn ways that they can support their child during and after their time in treatment.
In order to promote further family involvement, we make it as easy as possible for families to stay in touch with their children while they are in our care. We allow parents and guardians to visit at any time, which is not something that many residential treatment centers offer. We also encourage consistent communication by allowing phone calls to occur at any time. This is something else that makes us stand out from other residential programs, as many only allow phone calls at specific times.
