Individual therapy: Each adolescent who heals at Southstone will work with an individual therapist on a regular basis. Individual therapy is an optimal environment in which adolescents can process experiences and address topics that they may be hesitant to discuss in a group setting. Examples of groups that may be featured during an adolescent’s time at Southstone include the following:
- Social skills
- Anger management
- Feelings and behaviors

Family therapy: We strongly encourage parents and other caregivers to participate in their child’s treatment at Southstone to the greatest degree that is both possible and clinically appropriate. Family therapy sessions can also teach all participants how to better support one another and function as a healthier and more productive unit.
Recreation and structured leisure: Cooking, arts and crafts, team sports, structured play, and cultural events are among the many therapeutic recreational opportunities that adolescents may have the opportunity to experience during their time at Southstone. The recreational and structured leisure component of our adolescent residential programming includes a broad scope of activities that are appropriate for young people at various developmental and skill levels.
Residential living: Southstone Behavioral Health includes two dormitories for adolescents who are participating in residential programming with us. Bannister Hall (for female guests) and Birch Hall (for male guests) both feature residential supervisors who work in conjunction with our therapists and our director of clinical services to ensure that each young person is having a productive and beneficial residential experience.
Community involvement: Southstone guests have many opportunities to participate in community-based activities, including recreational experiences and educational visits to local sites of historic, cultural, or scientific significance. Promoting healthier behaviors among adolescents at Southstone Behavioral Health in South Boston, VA
In addition to following a personalized treatment plan, each adolescent who participates in residential care at Southstone also receives an individualized behavior plan.
The behavior planning process involves a detailed review of considerable information, including pre-admission screenings and documentation, the adolescent’s treatment history, a biopsychosocial evaluation, the contents of the young person’s personalized treatment plan, and a functional behavioral analysis.
Our individual behavior plans are one part of a comprehensive effort to add beneficial structure to the daily lives of our guests, with the goal of helping them develop a greater capacity for self-regulation and self-control. Helping our guests become more successful and independent also allows them to be less conspicuously vulnerable to negative attention from other people.
The behavioral component of residential treatment at Southstone is modeled on the principles and philosophies of basic behavior modification. To promote the development of more positive social behaviors, all members of the Southstone staff provide constant monitoring and intensive instruction.
Whenever possible, we use positive behavior substitution and diversion to replace negative behaviors. Our professionals employ an array of evidence-based clinical practices, as well as techniques such as short and frequent interventions, redirection, praise, encouragement, and positive reinforcement.
When consequences are necessary, they are part of the treatment planning process, consistently applied, and of a nature and duration to have instructional meaning for the individual.
Ultimately, we want to ensure that our guests acquire the behavior-related skills that will allow them to function in a healthy, productive, and satisfying manner within the context of their families, schools, and communities.
