Educational services at Southstone in South Boston, VA
At Southstone, we recognize that placing your child in treatment is intimidating for a number of reasons. We know that part of your concern can stem from the fact that by placing your child in residential care, they will no longer be able to attend their home school. For this reason, we have included a thorough educational component in our programming so that treatment does not interrupt their education.
In order to assure that all adolescents in our care receive a well-rounded educational experience, we offer the following as part of our residential school program:
- Special education
- Vocational education
- Educational/vocational diagnostic evaluations and assessments
- On-site speech-language screening and services (contracted)
- On-site occupational therapy evaluations and services (contracted)
- On-site physical therapy evaluations and services (contracted)
Adolescents attend school every weekday, Monday through Friday. We address their educational needs with an awareness of the inherent differences of each youth based on their age and developmental level. Our director of education plans and approves every aspect of the curriculum.
One of the many benefits of our residential school is that we incorporate treatment into the school day. We offer a variety of educational settings to meet individual needs and provide a safe, secure environment. Our school has self-contained classrooms, institutes a rotation to classrooms according to subject areas, and offers a short-term alternative classroom placement to address behavioral and emotional concerns. We also offer remedial classes for adolescents who may have fallen behind in school and require additional assistance. Our staff encourages all students to participate in extracurricular school activities, including outings, unit-based activities, leisure activities, etc. Our media resource center is also available to all students for research, enrichment, and enhancement activities.
For older adolescents who may be at risk for failing to graduate high school, we offer classes that allow them to develop the competencies necessary to obtain their GED. The decision to enroll an adolescent in GED preparatory classes is dependent on their age, academic standing, and personal interest. The adolescent’s parent or guardian, LEA, placement agency, and interdisciplinary team must all be in agreement with the decision.
Therapeutic vocational services offered at Southstone in South Boston, VA
In addition to the traditional education services, we also offer vocational education programming. At Southstone, we believe that giving adolescents the opportunity to explore vocational opportunities is extremely beneficial to their overall healing process. It can serve to give them a sense of purpose and a way to define goals for their future.
Our vocational services are divided into three categories, as described below.
Vocational education occurs both in school and as part of the daily afterschool activities. Within this program, students are given the opportunity to meet with local community representatives (including those from banks, grocery stores, the county registrar, etc.) in order to practice real-life aspects of various career options.
The vocational campus work program gives students a chance to learn skills that will enhance their ability to secure and maintain employment upon graduation. In this program, students can work in various settings within our facility, including housekeeping, landscaping, facility maintenance, and office support services. The treatment teams assign work placements based on an adolescent’s application, interests, and career goals. This program offers opportunities that promote the following:
- Appropriate work behavior
- Job development activities
- Career awareness
- Improved self-esteem and self-confidence
- Development of work skills
- On- and off-campus work experience (when appropriate)
- Increased potential for future employment
- A realistic work environment
- Participation in community service activities
Vocation therapeutic programming is something that all adolescents will engage in. They receive unit-based activities that teach independent living skills. Our staff members teach activities of daily living (ADLs) on a daily basis within each unit’s milieu. Along with this, adolescents participate in social skill modules and career-building exercises. They also take part in expressive and art groups that provide structure within their personal living environment, allowing them to enhance the internalization of learned skills through actual experience.
Ensuring that we meet your child’s educational needs while they are at Southstone in South Boston, VA
Just as every adolescent’s treatment needs are different, so are their educational needs. We customize each adolescent’s educational interventions based on the symptoms that they have been experiencing and the ways that their education has been impacted by them.
In order to begin this process, we request multiple pieces of information pertaining to a youth’s educational background at the time of admission. This information includes the following:
- Copy of the adolescent’s eligibility for special education services and placement
- Current IEP and grade placement
- Notes on any disciplinary actions, if applicable
- Copy of most recent education evaluation and testing scores
- Copy of referral letter sent to the appropriate school district requesting funding
- Documentation of LEA-appointed surrogate parent, if applicable
Our staff uses this information to assist in the development of appropriate educational programming. Additionally, we check the dates of previous tests and evaluations to determine if they were administered within one year of the admission date. If they are older than one year, our staff will administer appropriate testing.
Adolescents participate in achievement testing on an annual basis through educational services. Additional diagnostic and/or evaluation services are provided based on referrals to address individual needs. This includes tests or evaluations to comply with federal and state special education requirements.
